As a participant in a 10-day Erasmus Plus volunteer project, I had the opportunity to experience the beauty and resilience of St. Marteen firsthand. From the stunning beaches to the vibrant culture and welcoming people, this island left an indelible impression on me.During my stay, I had the privilege of staying in the community center of a local neighborhood. This allowed me to immerse myself in the local culture and get to know the community on a deeper level. I had the chance to participate in various community activities, such as local festivals and gatherings, and learned about the current problems the community was facing.One of the most impactful experiences for me was seeing the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. This devastating natural disaster had caused extensive damage to the island, and the effects were still visible in some areas. I was humbled by the resilience and strength of the local people, who were working hard to rebuild their homes and businesses. It was inspiring to see the community come together and support each other during this difficult time.Despite the challenges, St. Marteen is still a place of incredible beauty and wonder. During my stay, I had the opportunity to visit some of the island's most iconic sights, such as the Great Bay Beach, which offers breathtaking views of the turquoise waters and the colorful boats in the harbor. I also visited the St. Maarten Zoo, where I saw exotic animals and learned about the important conservation work being done to protect them.One of my favorite experiences was visiting the Loterie Farm, a lush nature reserve located in the foothills of the island's highest peak. The scenery was simply breathtaking, with cascading waterfalls, lush vegetation, and stunning panoramic views of the island. I also had the opportunity to participate in outdoor activities such as zip lining, hiking, and swimming in the natural pools.But what really made my experience in St. Marteen truly unforgettable was the warmth and hospitality of the local people. From the moment I arrived, I was made to feel welcome and at home. Whether it was sharing a meal with a local family, or simply chatting with someone on the street, I was struck by the genuine kindness and generosity of the people I met.In conclusion, my time in St. Marteen was an incredible journey of learning, growth, and connection. I came away with a deeper appreciation for the island's beauty, resilience, and the incredible people who call it home. I look forward to returning in the future for more projects and to continue building meaningful relationships with the community.
