The main methodology at the core of the project is Theatre of the Oppressed Methodology which was developed by Brazilian Augusto Boal in the context of discrimination and human rights violation in Brazilian society in the 70’-ties. The main idea of these methods is to make people experience and understand how any change of an attitude, behaviour or thinking pattern can have a powerful significant effect on their life as well as lives of people around them.
The project will focus Newspaper Theatre, which engages citizens in an interactive and very participatory way in a dialogue to explore and find solutions to whatever problems the community is facing, starting from media content. One of the newspaper theatre aims is to stimulate critical thinking and “consumption” of media content and to stimulate engagement and interest towards issues raised through the performance (linked with oppression cases covered or not covered by the media).
The main goal of the project is to increase the capacity of the youth work sector to raise the civic participation and involvement of young people in democratic process as well as to develop their critical responsible media consumption behaviours. In this sense a training course activity targeting 30 youth workers from 10 different European countries it is envisioned to be organized in Madeira.
Mainly through this training the following objectives are planned to contribute to achieve the main aim:
➢ To introduce innovative methodologies (such as Newspaper Theatre) in youth work field across Europe;
➢ To raise the capacity of partner organizations to operate at European level in critical media consumption;
➢ To stimulate the exchange of best practices in youth work in working with newspaper theatre in tackling issues faced by young people; ➢ To stimulate the development of a network of Newspaper Theatre practitioners in various regions of Europe;
